Why there's never been a more exciting time to study journalism

Journalism has come a long way from the days of relying on the wireless and a newspaper.

The industry has been reinvigorated. Digital media is giving rise to a new, more powerful narrative.

Podcasts are thriving. Digital media is being consumed at an unprecedented pace. Journalists can reach larger, more targeted audiences than ever before.

Now, even the smallest voices can make the biggest impact.

Dear media...

Combining traditional and non-traditional forms of journalism with emerging industry trends, Bond's Bachelor of Journalism (CRICOS 063077B) has a strong practical focus, giving students the opportunity to build their portfolio before graduation.

Under the guidance of award-winning industry professionals - and sometimes even working alongside them - , students hone their storytelling and reporting skills while gaining real industry experience through Bond's Pop Up Newsroom. The Pop Up Newsroom has covered a range of national and international events including the Women in Media conference and the Australian leg of the Pitch@Palace competition.

With the support of Bond's Career Development Centre, students also have the opportunity to undertake internships in Australia or internationally.

George Lysnar was studying engineering at another university before changing his career path and starting to study journalism at Bond. As he nears the end of his degree, he already has a breadth of experience under his belt.

"I've been able to get a far more personal learning experience," he says.

"I know all my lecturers by name and they all know me. On top of that I've had constant hands-on experience, such as Women in Media, BUFTA and Pitch@Palace."

Student Mia Adams shares a similar experience. She was attracted to Bond because of the focus on preparing graduates for their careers.

"The emphasis on professionalism is what initially drew me to Bond," she says.

"You can feel from day one that your career is going to be taking seriously and that the teachers will do their best to help you achieve your goals.

"Within my first semester lecturers were putting themselves out to help me gain internships and real-world connections. Bond has provided me with the confidence and the training to enter my industry equipped and ready to make a mark.”
