Research interests
I am a Walkley Award-winning journalist, writer and academic, with research outputs/interests in the fields of data-driven journalism, hybrid and new media formats, news and feature writing styles, postcolonial literature, narrative non-fiction, creative writing pedagogy and practice, and the intersections between history, memory, empathy and narrative.
My PhD thesis engages, both critically and creatively, with the tensions between history, present, memory and forgetting, drawing on my professional background in journalism and my enduring interest in fiction. I also write fiction and non-fiction as research in practice and am the co-writer of the Walkley Award-winning podcast Lost in Larrimah, which has been optioned by HBO. I am the co-author of Writing Feature Stories: How to research and write articles—from listicles to longform.
I believe in empowering students to engage in primary research and high-level journalistic practice. My Investigative Journalism students have published many high-profile collaborative investigations in high-quality publications including the Guardian Australia, Crikey, APN Australian Regional Media and News Corp Australia. I have received a national Office of Learning and Teaching Citation for my industry-connected approach to teaching data-driven and investigative journalism. The pedagogical and disciplinary learnings from these projects have been disseminated in both academic and industry publications.
I am an enthusiastic collaborator and love working across institutional and disciplinary borders. For example, I am a specialist narrative coach for Bond University’s Transformer program (an Australian-first entrepeneurship program) and have worked on networked, interactive data-driven projects for The Guardian Australia and partnered with students and lecturers from 28 Australian universities to cover the 2016 federal election.
