Bond at the Olympics: Brent Livermore

Brent Livermore – Hockey – 2000, 2004

Brent Livermore

When Brent Livermore tells aspiring athletes what is needed to succeed at the highest level, he could easily be describing his years at Bond University.

“You must employ a growth mindset,” says the hockey legend, who won bronze at the 2000 Sydney Olympics before captaining the Kookaburras to the ultimate prize at the 2004 Athens Games.

“That means you’ll always be seeking feedback, searching for an edge and striving to establish a clear plan with purposeful development focuses. With a growth mindset, you will look for continual improvement and never settle for mediocrity.”

A midfielder who made his Australian debut in 1997, Livermore played more than 300 matches for the national team, scored 30 international goals and claimed countless trophies in his sparkling career.

This included three Champions Trophies, Commonwealth Games gold in 2002 and 2006, and that epic golden-goal win at Athens 2004, the first Olympic gold for the Australian men’s hockey team after decades of near misses.

In the wake of his hockey career, Livermore “employed a growth mindset” to enrol at Bond where he completed degrees in Business, Property and Sustainable Development and Sports Management, which he has since transferred to senior administrative and coaching roles in the sport he loves.
