Sharknado alert

Bull Sharks QAFLW player kicking for goal

Grace Knight

Two apex predators clash this weekend when the Bond Bull Sharks take on the Southport Sharks.

The clubs sit atop the QAFLW food chain and the winner of this round 11 confrontation can inflict a psychological wound on their opponent ahead of a potential finals showdown.

The Bull Sharks have been bolstered by the return of some rising stars from the Gold Coast Suns Academy, and although a victory would not be enough to dethrone the ladder leaders, the game presents the coaching staff with a chance to test a near finals-strength side against the comp

etition’s benchmark.

Southport boasts a well-equipped ground with a strong support from their home crowd, which will likely be amplified on Saturday as their match follows the Southport men’s VFL game.

Nevertheless, the spacious Fankhauser Reserve should favour both team’s style of play, setting the stage for an exciting contest.

Last time they met

Following their disappointing 41-7 defeat at The Canal in round 4, the Bull Sharks will be hoping to flip the narrative this weekend.

Their previous encounter highlighted Southport’s dominance in stoppages, centre bounces and clearances.

As they approach the upcoming game, the head coach Andy Lovell acknowledged the importance of improving in these areas.

“Stoppages are going to be a pretty big focus for us because whoever wins the stoppage obviously owns territory,” Lovell said.

Focus points

Lovell said the team’s primary focus for the past several weeks has been on continuous improvement both individually and collectively.

While acknowledging Southport’s settled style of play and existing synergy as their advantage, he remains confident that the Bull Sharks possess the necessary skills to challenge the ladder leaders.

Fresh off an impressive 73-1 victory against Wilston Grange, Lovell expects another strong defensive performance from the Bull Sharks.

“The girls were fantastic defensively last week but I think the key to success will be in also building our offense and scoring ability,” he said.

The primary objective will be to string together four strong quarters, which they have struggled to do in recent weeks.

Lovell eagerly anticipates watching the team showcase a complete and formidable performance throughout the entire match.

Returning faces

The Bull Sharks will benefit from the return of several key players including Sienna McMullen who is part of the national academy team.

Another valuable addition is Ava Usher who sat out the previous game due to a concussion.

Both players also feature in the state U18 Queensland team.

In total, there have been 10 academy players who have returned to the Bull Sharks’ side since their last encounter against Southport.

The influx of talent adds depth to the squad but it remains crucial for the players to work cohesively as a team.
